Were Patrick Henry of the famous “Give me liberty or give me death speech” walking among us today, he would no doubt remind both America and Israel of the words he spoke on Dec. 23, 1776 when he said, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis shrink from the service of their country, but he that stands by it now, deserves the thanks of man and woman. Tyranny like hell, is not easily conquered, yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph,” -- Dec. 23, 1776.

It is past time that the United States came alongside and supported the tiny democratic state of Israel in its fight to the death for liberty and freedom against the rip tide of middle-eastern Islamic evil which, like Nazi Germany, has pledged to totally destroy every living Jew on the face of the earth while the U.N. stands idly by twiddling its thumbs.

For the most part, America’s Christian Community is standing by Israel. But this fight should be led by America’s Jews, just as the Civil Rights fight was led by Martin Luther King Jr. and the NAACP.  Certainly the Jewish community should be out front agitating and stirring up support for Israel. So why are the Jewish leaders of the U.S.  Congress nearly mute on the subject?

Some think this is just a continuation of the historic Jewish-Arab-Muslim conflict that has and will go on and on for centuries to come. Not so, this game is being played for keeps. If Hamas, with Iran’s help, is successful in annihilating Israel, then they will turn their attention to the annihilation of western civilization. Meanwhile America’s Jewish political leadership seems to be dozing at the switch. Israel needs our help and the help of the western world – now!

In the last two elections Jewish voters have gone to the polls and faithfully supported the Democrat Party and its Islamic leaning presidential candidate. Now, when a great opportunity has arisen for the party to return the favor, there is mostly silence coming out of the Democrat camp. Israel gets more help and support from America’s Christians and conservatives than from Democrat and Jewish political leaders and organizations.

For them political party support seems more important than the survival of the state of Israel. Jewish political leaders like Senators Charles E. Schumer, Patrick Leahy and Carl Levin should be jumping up and down on the senate floor screaming that unless immediate action is taken by the U. S. to come to Israel’s aid, they will lead a political vendetta against both political parties that will singe their hair and turn them all out of office this November. In the meantime, America’s President is warning Israel and its Prime Minister that they must restrain themselves; he forgets that it is never wise to restrain good policy.

In the meantime, where are the American Jewish Martin Luther King Jrs.?  Certainly neither Schumer, Leahy nor Levin fall into that category.  Their treatment of Israel and the Jewish voters is more like how Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson treat black voters, lots of talk and a dearth of action.

But Israel does not have a choice. For the second time in less than a hundred years Israel faces total extermination. It must do all it can to defend and protect its citizens from Hamas’ reign of terror. Time and time again Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire and Israel has honored that agreement by ceasing its fire while Hamas has kept right on firing missiles into Israel.

Israel goes to extreme lengths not to kill or wound Arab civilians. Hamas goes to extreme lengths to hide its weapons in homes, schools, mosques, and U.N. administered hospitals and schools, knowing that the Israelis will be reluctant to fire into areas where there are a lot of innocent children.  And they hope pictures of dead Arab children will appear on TV.

Patrick Henry was right when he said that, “Tyranny like hell, is not easily conquered”. Truly for Israel, “These are the times that try men’s souls”. But more than just the survival of Israel is at stake, the survival of western civilization is equally at hazard.
