Left’s Hypocrisy On Full Display After D.C. ‘Insurrection’

The angry election fraud protest that led to the temporary takeover of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday perfectly illuminates the hypocrisy of the Democratic far left when it comes to political violence.

Republican officials and rank-and-file GOP conservatives immediately and forcefully condemned the pro-Trump rioters. Nothing unusual about that: During this riot-torn year, Republicans have consistently, loudly and frequently denounced violence, no matter who did it.

What about the Democrats and their extreme-left supporters? Tragically, for them, violence is always acceptable when it’s in service to their cause. That’s especially true since the riots and mass protests began in late May following the death of George Floyd.

But, as usual, congressional Democrats, the legacy press and social media giants have misreported, distorted and twisted facts to suit their own leftist agenda and inflame public opinion.

Republicans, however, have taken a mature and responsible path.

Oklahoma Republican Rep. Markwayne Mullin, appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday, didn’t excuse the behavior. Far from it.

“There is no excuse and no one is to blame but ourselves,” he told host George Stephanopoulos. “We need to take a hard look at our country, we need to take a hard look at the way we debate. We can agree to disagree but that doesn’t mean I don’t love you. That doesn’t mean I don’t care for you. That doesn’t mean I don’t love this country any more or less than you but what we did yesterday was absolutely inexcusable.”

The response from former Bill Clinton aide turned “journalist” Stephanopoulos lacked both grace and any kind of self-recognition of what the violently anti-Trump media and Democrats have wrought:

“We didn’t do it. The mobsters did it. The rioters did it. The president encouraged it. But thank you for your time, congressman.”

In comments made not long after, Joe Biden actually referred to President Donald Trump’s supporters as “domestic terrorists,” setting up the very real possibility of political tribunals or criminal trials for those who backed his opponent and dared to protest clear voter fraud.

“They weren’t protesters — don’t dare call them protesters. They were a riotous mob, insurrectionists, domestic terrorists,” Biden said.

Now, flash back about half a year, when Antifa and Black Lives Matter were violently terrorizing cities, torching businesses, assaulting local citizens, even setting up “autonomous zones,” while “defunding the police” became all the rage among Democrats and other leftists.

Biden running mate Kamala Harris in June called the out-of-control riots a “movement” and prophetically warned on Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show”:

“They’re not gonna stop before Election Day and they’re not going to stop after Election Day. And everyone should take note of that. They’re not gonna let up and they should not.”

On Jan. 20, she’ll be one heartbeat away from the presidency.

Contrast that with something else that also happened in June: Florida Republican Rep. Greg Steube’s measured, moderate congressional resolution condemning the violence (hat tip: Instapundit) and rioting across the country following Floyd’s death.

It should have been a slam dunk of bipartisan commitment to nonviolence.

Instead, Democrats voted unanimously to reject it. This, even though the resolution condemned Floyd’s death as “inconsistent with the values and conduct expected of law enforcement officers.”

The Democrats’ act of incitement had a predictable impact. The rejection of Steube’s resolution was followed by at least 22 other violent protests and riots in the ensuing weeks and months of 2020, leading to dozens of deaths and billions of dollars in property damage.

There’s no question that, by their refusal to condemn violence, congressional Democrats sent a clear and unmistakable signal to their shock troops in the streets: Violence by the left in pursuit of its political goals is acceptable; it’s a form of “street justice,” without mercy or mitigation, delivered brutally raw to its victims.

Meanwhile, violence by Trump supporters, or anyone else not on the left, is “terrorism,” or an “insurrection,” as the media and their bosom buddies in the Democratic Party now call the D.C. protests.

Funny how clear hypocrisy is to everyone but the hypocrite.

There are plenty of other examples of this dichotomy, especially in the media, which now routinely parrots Democratic talking points. A piece this week in the Daily Caller runs down a lengthy list of them. Here are just a few:

Six months ago The New York Times, which has been described as the national ‘newspaper of record,’ made excuses for rioters who attempted to take over the federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon.

It reported that ‘the nightly assault on the federal courthouse has been part of a much wider peaceful resistance … that began assembling nearly two months ago in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapolis police.’

The Times continued, ‘the aim, as it has been in other cities, was to assemble for sweeping police reform and racial justice.’

Reporting on Wednesday’s protest in Washington, D.C., the Times’ ‘peaceful resistance’ suddenly became a ‘mob.’

Instead of ‘assembling,’ the protesters engaged in ‘rampage’ and ‘chaos,’ incited by President Trump, which became a ‘part of his legacy.’

Other examples were equally egregious:

CNN reported on the August mass destruction in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as ‘fiery but mostly peaceful.’ As CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez described the scene as ‘an expression of anger and frustration,’ the entire background was engulfed in flames.

Likewise, last year during the BLM protests CNN anchor Chris Cuomo made excuses for rioters.

Cuomo said on air, ‘Please, show me where it says protesters are supposed to be polite and peaceful.’

CNN’s stance did an about-face when reporting on Wednesday’s protest at the Capitol Building.

CNN reported, ‘America faces 13 days of danger before the departure of an unhinged commander in chief who set his mob on the U.S. Capitol in an act of insurrection that shattered a more than 220-year tradition of peaceful transfers of power.’

The point is, just like the leftist politicians they support, the media conveniently forget their own role in all this “chaos” and fan the flames of hatred toward Trump, the GOP and conservatives in general.

The immediate response has been vile, with social media sites and others essentially “deplatforming” a sitting president of the United States, a digital coup.

Meanwhile, politicians and their media allies ignore the fact that they egged on the riots that raged for highly dubious reasons of “social justice,” pushed by Marxists and dysfunctional juvenile misfits.

Sadly, we’re watching the rule of law and public civility dissolve, all as part of the left’s unceasing political war waged against Trump since 2016.
